Esperanto-Asocio de Britio okazigis ceremonion ĉe Kolegio Somerville, Oksfordo, memore al Marjorie Boulton precize cent jarojn post ŝia naskiĝo.

La ceremonio, aranĝita kaj gvidata de Tim Owen, malfermiĝis per fonaj informoj pri Marjorie, senkompare bonega ambasadoro por Esperanto, kaj unu el ĝiaj plej grandiozaj verkistoj. Ŝi estis fekundege aktiva, kaj en 2008 oni kandidatigis ŝin por la Premio Nobel pri Literaturo pro ŝiaj verkojn en Esperanto.

Ŝi naskiĝis la 7-an de majo 1924 en Teddington, sud-okcidenta Londono, solinfano de Evelyn (fraŭline: Cartlidge) kaj Harry Boulton. Ŝia patro estis la lernejestro de la gimnazio en Barton-upon-Humber, kie edukiĝis la filino, jam flue legkapabla trijaraĝe.

Marjorie estis alvokita por intervjuo al Kolegio Somerville en Oksfordo en 1941. Ricevinte la plej superan eblan noton en ĉiu studobjekto, plus stipendion de la graflando, ŝi spertis «momenton ekstazan», kiam ŝi ricevis inviton tie studi la anglan literaturon. Tiu intervjuo estis la komenco de rilato, kiu daŭris la tutan vivon. Ni postlasis la eksteran mondon, kaj saltis al Marjorie la esperantistino.

La ŝlosila jaro estis 1949, en kiu okazis du notindaĵoj. La unua estas, ke ŝi eldonis sian unuan volumon de poezio en la angla, Preliminaries. Ĝi ne aparte plaĉis al ŝi; aliaj homoj jam diris ĉion, kion ŝi volis diri en la angla. En tiu sama jaro ŝi malkovris Esperanton, kaj, homo sentema pri homeco, estis al ĝi allogita.

Ŝia unua poemo estis Marborda ŝtono, kiu publikiĝis en Esperanto en Skotlando en 1952. La redaktoron, William Auld, ĝi tiel forte impresis, ke li kontaktis ŝin petante legi la ne-ekzistantajn antaŭajn verkojn!

Sekvis tion en 1953 Nuntempa Eposo, kvankam tio ne estis publikigita ĝis 2022: ĝia inspiro estis la trasuferoj de Vlasta Uršič, kara amikino de Marjorie, kiu petegis ŝin ne eldoni la poemon. Marjorie kondutis dece, notante, ke oferi «mian plej bonan fruan verkon» ne estis sendolore.

En 1954 ŝi verkis (tamen ne publikigis) La sekreta psiko, erotikan sonetaron. Ĝi eldoniĝis pirate en la 80-aj jaroj, kaj oni ĝenerale kredis, ke verkis ĝin Marjorie, sed tion ŝi neniam konfesis. Oni nun scias, ke ĝuste Marjorie kreis ĝin: Edmund Grimley Evans okupiĝis pri la postlasaĵo, kaj en taglibro post estigo de la pirata versio ŝi skribis, ke ŝi ne sentas honton.

En 1955 ŝi fariĝis konata al la internacia esperantistaro per la enmondiĝo de Kontralte. Ni aŭdis kelkaj poemojn el ĝi:

En tiu fekundega unua jardeko Marjorie laboris konstante, verkante proksimume unu poemon en ĉiu tria tago. Ŝi estis tre sukcesa nova alveninto al la Belartaj Konkurso de UEA: Duan premion kaj meritan mencion ŝi ricevis en 1952; tri premiojn en 1953 kaj du en 1954, kaj pliajn tri – inkluzive de du unualokajn – en 1955. Entute ŝi rikoltis 18 premiojn en tiu ĉi unua jardeko. Ne eblas, do, nei ŝian verk-kapablon. Tamen, ŝi kapablis ankaŭ traduki: kvankam supraĵe similaj, verki kaj traduki estas artoj senrilataj, kaj estas neniu kialo por supozi, ke homo kapabla je unu havos talenton je la alia.

1905 estis la plej grava jaro en la historio de Esperanto, post 1887. Ĝi estis la jaro de la unua monda kongreso de esperantistoj, kiu konkretigis multon. Zamenhof atentigis pri la naturo de la okazaĵo: «Ni konsciu bone la tutan gravecon de la hodiaŭa tago, ĉar hodiaŭ inter la gastamaj muroj de Bulonjo-sur-Maro kunvenis ne francoj kun angloj, ne rusoj kun poloj, sed homoj kun homoj.»
Antaŭ la preskaŭ 600 partoprenantoj li deklamis sian Preĝon sub la verda standardo, klaran aludon al la flago de Esperanto, jam uzita de la loka grupo en Bulonjo kaj adoptita por Esperanto dum tiu sama kongreso.

Jen tio, kion opiniis Marjorie pri tio: «Preĝo sub la verda standardo esprimas, simple kaj sincere, kaj vere kun ia efika simpla klimaksemo kaj emociiga ripetado, idealon de religia toleremo kaj interfratiĝo de la tuta homaro.»

Marjorie kredis, ke ŝi ne faris tre bonan laboron: malkonsentis la ĵusaŭdintoj!

Verŝajne instigite de la centa datreveno de la naskiĝo de LLZ en 1959, la eldonejo Routledge and Kegan Paul kontraktis kun Marjorie por verki biografion en la angla pri la iniciatinto de Esperanto. Marjorie estis pravigeble fiero pri la rezulto – ankoraŭ la plej bona biografio pri LLZ en la angla – des pli ĉar ŝi naskis ĝin sub nekredebla premo: la eldonejo donis al ŝi nur naŭ monatojn por esplorado, verkado kaj polurado. 

Zamenhof, Creator of Esperanto aperis en 1960 (kaj en Esperanto en 1962), kun dediĉo al ŝia patrino: «Por Evelyn Maud Boulton, anima parencino de Zamenhof kaj perfekta patrino, danke.»

Laŭtlegis fragmenton de ĝi Tim Owen, kaj Malcolm Jones la saman el Zamenhof, aŭtoro de Esperanto.

Malgraŭ sia elstareco en la kampo, Marjorie ne limiĝis al poezio. Humphrey Tonkin poste informis la ĉeestantojn, ke la poezi-eksplodo en la 1950-aj jaroj estis ĉio, kio jam estis en la kapo kaj devis elkraniiĝi. Verkinte ĉion tion ĉi, ŝi volis eksperimenti per aliaj ĝenroj: ne ĉar ŝi kredis atingi la samajn pintojn, sed pro tio, ke mankis tio en la Esperanta kulturo, kaj ŝi volis ke ĝi havu ankaŭ tiujn.

Ŝi estis talenta dramaturgo (Virino ĉe la landlimo (1959); Nia sango (1970); Ni aktoras (1971)); biografo; novelistino (Okuloj (1967), kolekto da 13 rakontetoj); eseistino (Ne nur leteroj de plum-amikoj (1984)), kaj pedagogo (Faktoj kaj Fantazioj (1984)). Tim Owen laŭlegis sian plej ŝatatan ekzempleron de ŝia verkado, de libreto pri ŝiaj katoj, Dudek piedetoj .

Ŝian elstarajn literaturajn kapablojn bele notis estrarano de la Akademio Literatura de Esperanto, Nicola Ruggiero, en mesaĝo por tiu ĉi ceremonio.

La Direktoro de la Sekcio de Kontrolado de Lerniloj de la Akademio de Esperanto, Lee Miller, sendis mesaĝon en kiu li diris, ke progresantoj ofte demandas: «Kion mi povas uzi por plu lerni?» Li tre ofte senhezite respondas: «Faktoj kaj Fantazioj de Marjorie Boulton.» Edmund Grimley Evans kaj Tim Owen laŭtlegis en ambaŭ lingvoj lian mesaĝon.

En 1967 ŝi estis alelektita al la Akademio de Esperanto, en kies sino ŝi restis dum duonjarcento, ĝis sia morto. Sendis personan mesaĝon Probal Dasgupta, ĝia prezidanto, kiun muldis Marjorie. Edmund Grimley Evans laŭtlegis sian mesaĝon; Tim Owen elbuŝigis tradukon, per kiu provizis Brian Moon.

Finfine Humphrey Tonkin, Honora Prezidanto de UEA, parolis tre kortuŝe pri virino, kiun li unue renkontis antaŭ 70 jaroj.

Libro-donacado

En 2022 EAB eldonis la plenan poezian verkaron de Marjorie's, Unu animo homa, kiun kompilis kaj redaktis Edmund Grimley Evans, pro kio oni elektis lin Esperantisto de la Jaro.

Li donacis ekzempleron – duvolume, ĉefe pro la fekundeco de Marjorie en tiu unua jardeko – al Sarah Butler, la bibliotekistino de Somerville. Tim Owen aldoni al tio ekzempleron de Rimleteroj, la rim-korespondado inter Marjorie kaj William Auld en ilia junaĝo, plus luksan specialan eldonon, kiun li kreis por partoprenantoj de la Brita Kongreso kaj la ceremonio.

La ceremonion, precize du horojn post ĝia komenciĝo, bele finis Jackie Watson, kiu parolis pri somervilano konata kaj amata ĉirkaŭ la mondo, sed pri kiu ŝi neniam antaŭe aŭdis! Kia ŝoko, por ŝi, kaj kiel bele nun konscii pri la poezio de Marjorie! Sekvis refreŝigaĵoj kaj babilado.

The Esperanto Association held a memorial ceremony for Marjorie Boulton at Somerville College, Oxford, on what would have been her 100^th birthday.

We opened up with some biographical background about Marjorie, a magnificent ambassador for the Esperanto Community, and one of its greatest writers. She was prolific in her output, and was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature for her works in Esperanto in 2008.

She was born on 7 November 1924 in Teddington, now in London, to Harry and Evelyn (née: Cartlidge). Their only child, she was a precocious reader already at 3. Her father was the headmaster at the school in Barton-upon-Humber, which is where Marjorie grew up.

She was called to an interview at Somerville in 1941. Having received top marks in every subject, plus a grant, she received "a moment of ecstacy" when the envelope inviting her arrived. She gained first-class degree in 1944, an MA in 1947, and a BLitt in 1948. She put the importance of Somerville into her own words, writing for Somerville Magazine.

• Somerville's Jackie Watson (Alumni relations) read out an abridged version of Marjorie's Life before Somerville, alternating with Humphrey Tonkin, reading a translation by Brian Moon.

Tim Owen, who organised the event, explained that the relationship with Somerville didn't stop there. Marjorie returned in 1971, completing a PhD with a dissertation on Charles Reade in 1976. She spent the rest of her life in Oxford, in her small house on Stockwell Street. She was a frequent visitor to the College, and was called by some "Somerville's Pet".

In between the two Somerville periods was educational work. She trained and worked in education, ending with becoming principal, in 1962, of Charlotte Mason College (now part of the University of Cumbria) in Ambleside, a college for training female teachers. She produced a six-volume set of introductory texts about English literature, starting with The Anatomy of Poetry in 1953, when she was a lecturer at the College of Domestic Science in Hexham, Northumberland. These books are still on university reading lists today.

We then left the external world behind and jumped to Marjorie the Esperantist.

The key year was 1949 in which two things of note happened. One was that she published her first poetry in English, Preliminaries. She didn't think she'd done too good of a job with it: other people had got there first with English. She also discovered Esperanto, which was a natural fit for somebody with Marjorie's humanitarian sensibilities.

At some point she borrowed a copy of Streĉita Kordo (Taut Rope) by the Hungarian Esperantist (and real champion of Esperanto literature) Kálmán Kalocsay. That was it for her: she knew that this was a language in which she could express anything. And it initiated an explosion of poetry!

Her first poem Marborda ŝtono, was published in Esperanto en Skotlando in 1952. The editor, William Auld, was so impressed that he immediately wrote back to her to ask to read her non-existent previous poems!

That was followed by Nuntempa Eposo  in 1953, although it wasn't published until 2022: its inspiration was her friend, Vlasta Uršič, who had survived a terrible experience. Vlasta begged Marjorie not to publish it, and so she didn't, noting somewhere, that it caused her some pain not to give up "my best early work".

In 1954 she wrote (though did not publish) La sekreta psiko, a sequence of erotic sonnets. A pirate edition was released in the 80s, and the identity of the author was presumed to be Marjorie, although she never admitted it. We know now that it was indeed her work: after she'd died, Edmund Grimley Evans dealt with her affairs. It's mentioned in her diary: "I'm not ashamed of it."

That takes us to 1955: Kontralte. We heard some poems from it:

1957 brought Cent Ĝojkantoj from which we heard:

Marjorie worked constantly in this febrile first decade, by some counts a poem every third day or so. She was a very successful new arrival at the World Esperanto Association's Belartaj Konkursoj (Literary Competitions): she received a Second Place and a Merit in 1952; three prizes in 1953 and two in 1954, and a further three – including two First Places – in 1955. Overall, she bagged 18 prizes in that first decade. There's no denying her ability as a writer, then. How about as a translator?

1905 was the most important year in the history of Esperanto following its birth in 1887: it was the year in which the first World Congress of Esperantists was held, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, northern France. Plenty of important decisions were taken there, and the gravity of the event wasn't lost on Ludoviko Zamenhof: "We should all be well aware of the total importance of this day, because today, within the hospitable walls of the Boulogne-sur-Mer are found not Frenchmen with Englishmen, not Russians with Poles, but people with people."

In front of the nearly 700 people present he declaimed his Preĝo sub la verda standardo (Prayer beneath the Green Banner), a clear allusion to the flag of Esperanto, which was confirmed at that same event, based on the one used by the local group. Marjorie stated her own opinion of it: "Preĝo sub la verda standardo expresses, simply and sincerely, and truly with a type of simple urge to climax and emotion-stirring repetition, an ideal of religious tolerance and fraternalisation of the whole of mankind."

Marjorie didn't feel she'd done a very good job with that. The people present disagreed!

Presumably inspired by the centenary of his birth in 1959, the publishers Routledge and Kegan Paul signed Marjorie to a deal to write a biography of Ludoviko Zamenhof. Marjorie was justifiably proud of the result – it is still the best biography of Zamenhof in English – even moreso considering the difficulty of its birth: Marjorie was given just nine months for research, writing and editing.

Zamenhof, Creator of Esperanto was published in 1960 (and in Esperanto translation in 1962), with the following dedication: "To Evelyn Maud Boulton, true follower of Zamenhof and my wonderful mother, with my thanks for everything."

We heard a fra gment of it, with Tim reading the English original, and Malcolm Jones the translation.

Despite excelling at poetry, Marjorie didn't limit herself to just that one artform. Humphrey Tonkin later informed us that the explosion in the 1950s was what was already in her head needing to come out. From there, she tried different genres, not necessarily to the same high standard: she did so because Esperanto was lacking in its literature, and she wanted it to have other forms.

She was a talented playwright (Virino ĉe la landlimo (1959); Nia sango (1970); Ni aktoras (1971); a biographer; a novelist (Okuloj (1967), a collection of 13 short stories; an essayist (Ne nur leteroj de plum-amikoj (1984), and a teacher (Faktoj kaj Fantazioj (1984). Tim Owen read out his favourite example of Marjorie's writing, from a book all about her cats, Dudek piedetoj : the excerpts were full of puns, so this excerpt was English-only:

A much more in-depth run-down of Marjorie's literary prowess was provided by Nicola Ruggiero, a board member of the Esperanto Academy of Literature, who sent a message by video.

The Director of the Esperanto Academy's Section for Reviewing Learning Materials, Lee Miller, sent a message saying that he often hears beginners ask "What can I learn from next?", and that Marjorie's Faktoj kaj Fantazioj is an answer he unhesitatingly gives. In his absence, Edmund Grimley Evans and Tim Owen read out his message in both languages.

In 1967 Marjorie was elected to the Esperanto Academy, where she remained for the following half-century until her death. We heard from its president, Probal Dasgupta, on whom Marjorie had a lasting effect. Edmund Grimley Evans read out his messsage; Tim Owen voiced a translation provided by Brian Moon.

Finally, Humphrey Tonkin, Honorary President of the World Esperanto Association, spoke very warmly about a woman he first got to know all of seventy years ago.

Book Donation

In 2022, the Esperanto Association of Britain published Marjorie's complete works of poetry, Unu animo homa, compiled and edited by Edmund Grimley Evans, for which he was elected Esperantist of the Year by a committee comprising Esperantists from around the world.

He donated a copy – naturally in two volumes because of Marjorie's prodigious output – to Sarah Butler, Somerville's Librarian. Tim Owen added to that a copy of Rimleteroj, the correspondence in rhyme between Marjorie and William Auld from their youth, plus a luxury special edition created just for people participating in EAB's conference and this event.

The ceremony, precisely two hours after it started, was rounded off beautifully by Jackie Watson speaking about a fellow Somervillian and how astonishing she had found Marjorie's poetry. A quick drink, canapés, and some chit-chat followed.

The 45^th Annual General Meeting of EAB was held at St Anne's College, Oxford on May 5, 2024.

As usual, the members voted on the trustee candidates for the following year. Three of the incumbent trustees were stepping down, and were replaced by three new candidates. Clare Hunter, the sole remaining trustee, was the only candidate for president.

A second item was on the ballot: following a decision by the members at AGM 2023, the Constitution was to be changed such that the quorum for AGMs is lowered from 20 members to 5. The trustees had added two small changes, which weren't enough to justify changing the Constitution but had been put to one side awaiting a larger change to accompany. Namely: that the trustees would appoint a secretary from among their number. The role hasn't been required in several years, and so has been fulfilled purely to ensure compliance with the Constitution. Since a point in the Constitution indicated that members seeking an EGM should write to the secretary requesting one, this wording was changed to "president".

The results were:

All trustees were duly elected, with Clare Hunter appointed president, succeeding the departing Edmund Grimley Evans, president since 2021, after 27 years of trusteeship. In recognition of his record-length service, the trustees awarded him a Fellowship, the first since John Wells in 2019.

The proposed revised Constitution was passed, and will now be sent to the Charity Commission for its approval. The 2018 Constitution will remain in effect until such time as the Charity Commission approves the revised one.

Several years ago EAB arranged with Katalin Kovats (editor of edukado.net) to come to the UK to train up several budding Esperanto teachers. That plan was derailed by the pandemic, and moved to 2024.

Daventry hosted Katalin and twelve teachers/group leaders/people whom new learners may spend time with over the weekend of 10-11 February:

There was much on offer, including a practical demonstration of how to memorably and effectively teach people how to use the reflexive without having to explain anything:

There was too much to fit into one single weekend, though, and so a second meeting, this time online, took place on for a couple of hours on Saturday, 23 March, in which the participants gave demonstrations using some of their own teaching material.

A report by John Greenwood about the teacher-training weekend will be in the summer edition of La Brita Esperantisto!

The dates have been announced for this year's exams in Esperanto, run in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR, Komuna Eŭropa Referenckadro (KER) in Esperanto. There will be three online sessions in June, in-person exams at the Universala Kongreso, and another weekend session in November.

The exams aren't free to take so you will have to pay. But: if you're successful and live in the UK, the examiners will inform EAB so that we can arrange to repay your exam costs, and even pay for a certificate to be printed and posted to you!

How good is your Esperanto? How can you tell?

Our colleagues at edukado.net have recently been hard at work transforming their 900 exercises into interactive versions. By completing them you get a score, and can see what was right and wrong.

They have now made it possible for Esperanto learners to sit mock CEFR exams for levals B1, B2, C1 and C2, all from home using that same intereactive format. The developmental work was funded by the Esperantic Studies Foundation.

For those elements which are either right or wrong, nothing is any different. But plenty of parts on an exam are more than that. In order for the mocks to be useful, Edukado.net has people who will provide written feedback on these parts of the exams. 

The people doing this are getting what amounts to a symbolic payment, and so the mock exams aren't free ... unless you happen to live in the UK. Why? Because EAB has guaranteed payment for 1000 € of mock exams a year!

The rules are straightforward:

• Candidates may take a maximum of two mock exams per year.
• Those two exams must be in neighbouring categories.

Eblis havi nur unu gajninton en ĉiu konkurso. Pluraj konkursintoj tamen montriĝis promes-plenaj. Rezultis el tio deksemajna tradukateliero sub lia gvidado, en kiu deko da konkursintoj grupe laboros per diversaj elektronikaj rimedoj.

La ateliero lanĉiĝis per kunveno en Zomo en lundo, la 18-a de marto, kaj daŭras nun per interaga traktado de provo de unu konkursinto traduki la unuan ĉapitron de Matilda de Roald Dahl. En la sekvaj semajnoj simile traktiĝos provoj de aliaj partoprenantoj traduki fragmentojn de libro, kiun ili elektis.

Kiu scias? Eble tio sekvigos novajn librojn, kiuj aperos antaŭ la okuloj de la tutmonda esperantistaro!

Antaŭ precize cent jaroj, en la 15-a de februaro 1924, naskiĝis John Islay (pron: ajla) Francis.

Li lernis Esperanton en sia junaĝo, post instigo de sia samlernejano William Auld. Ili estis karaj amikoj en The Hermitage School, Helensburgh, kaj Francis, fanatikulo pri vakeraj romanoj, volis, ke la duopo lernu la hispanan. Ili interkonsentis komenci lerni tiun lingvon, se Francis unue ekstudus Esperanton.

Jardekon poste li debutis internacie – post milittempa deĵorado en la Reĝa Flugarmeo – apud Auld, John Dinwoodie kaj Reto Rossetti, en la unua volumo eldonita de la poste fama Esperanto-eldonejo Stafeto: Kvaropo (1952).

Li poste plu famiĝis ene de Esperantujo kiel verkisto de prozo. Unue aperis kolekto de rakontetoj, Vitralo, en 1960. Lia renomo, tamen, venis per majstroverko eldonita en 1978: La granda kaldrono, laŭ la vortoj de Osmo Buller, « konsiderata la plej alta atingo de la Esperanta romano». Ĉiu ekzemplo rapide elvendiĝis, kaj ĝi dum jardekoj restis nehavebla, ĝis la Esperanto-Asocio de Skotlando reaperigis ĝin bitlibre en 2017.

Fierigas Esperanto-Asocion de Britio anonci, ke La granda kaldrono denove aperos paperforme baldaŭ kiel omaĝo al ĝia kreinto en la jaro en kiu li estus centjariĝinta.

Necesos iom pli da tempo por plilabori la tuton; la 592 paĝojn longa originala estis dum jardekoj la plej ampleksa romano verkita en Esperanto, kaj pluraj eraretoj kaj nekonsekvencaĵoj videbligis sin dum la pretigado. Estas tre verŝajne, ke ĝi estos aĉetebla ĉe la Brita Kongreso okazonta en Oksfordo de la 3-a ĝis la 5-a de majo.

John Francis
1924–2012

Pli da informoj pri John Francis kaj liaj verkoj troviĝas ĉe Vikipedio, kaj en aliaj anguloj de Interreto.

La du plej imponaj esperanto-poetoj el Britujo naskiĝis en 1924. Tial EAB dum la tuto de 2024 reeldonos kelkajn iliajn verkojn en projekto nomata Festjaro BAULDTON, en kiu ni festas la jarcentiĝojn de William Auld (1924–2006) kaj Marjorie Boulton (1924–2017).

La unua reeldono estos Rimleteroj, kompilaĵo de ilia korespondado per poŝtkartoj rondelforme inter 1953 kaj 1954. Jen du el la 84 mesaĝoj, kiujn ili interŝanĝis:

2023 montriĝis plia aktiva jaro rilate ĝian eldonagadon por Esperanto-Asocio de Britio. Entute ĝi eldonis 14 librojn: miksaĵon de ĝiaj kutimaj infanlibroj kaj de titoloj por legantoj pli spertaj kaj aĝaj.

La jaro komenciĝis per traduk-konkursoj lanĉitaj en la antaŭjara Zamenhof-tago, kaj malfermaj al esperantistoj ĉie en la mondo. La premioj estis pli ol la ofte simbolaj por tiaj konkursoj: estonta eldonado de la libro, kaj £500 (~580 €) kiel dankmonon poste.

La ĉefa konkurso celis traduki la unuan kaj trian ĉapitrojn de klasikaĵo de la anglalingva literaturo, Rebecca de Daphne du Maurier. Gajnis Malcolm Jones, kiu nun tradukas la restantajn ĉapitrojn. La dua konkurso nomiĝis Nova talento, kaj celis bonvenigi homojn ne tiel spertajn, kiujn eblos gvidi poste. Gajnis tion Tobiasz Kubisiowski de Pollando, tradukinte Matilda de Roald Dahl. Li jam provizis EAB per la unua malneto: la libron, do, eldoniĝos en 2024.

Ne nur infanlibroj
Post jaro en kiu EAB kalkulis 13 infanlibrojn inter sia 16-libra rikolto, oni bone atendus, ke per nova infanlibro ĝi bonvenigus la novan jaron. Tamen, ne: en januaro aperis Spionoj, psikologia romano verkita de Michael Frayn, kaj tradukita de Edmund Grimley Evans. Ĝin sevkis, en marto, la dua libro en la Muminserio, Ĉapelo de sorĉisto, en traduko de Sten Johansson.

Partoprenantoj en la Brita Kongreso en Kembriĝo havis la eblon aĉeti sep novajn librojn en aprilo, tamen nur unu lanĉiĝis oficiale en tiu semajnfino; la aliaj aperis like ĝis la jarfino. Tiun tie lanĉitan tradukis la gastpreleganto, Hans Becklin de Usono. Verŝajne ĉiuj jam aŭdis pri La murdo de Roger Ackroyd, unu el la plej famaj titoloj de la Reĝino de Krimo, Agatha Christie, kaj aparte konata pro sia ŝoka finalo. Plia tradukitaĵo lia debutis: Tro da aĵoj estas infanlibro, kiu rakontas pri akumulema pigo-paro. Teorie malpeza tasko por la tradukinto, krom tio, ke ĉio en ĝi rimiĝas. Tio kondukis, flanke, al tre interesa prezento dum la kongreso, en kiu Hans klarigis sian aliron. La libro estis oficiale lanĉita en junio.

La malgrandaoj
Postkongrese alvenis majo kaj du preskaŭ identaj libroj samtempe lanĉitaj, tradukoj de Little Brother de Cory Doctorow. Edmund Grimley Evans originale tradukis ĝin dum la pandemio: instigite de ĝia permesilo Krea Komunaĵo, li eksperimentis por seks-neŭtraligi la lingvaĵon. Rezultis el tio Malgranda sibo, en kiu estas uzataj, kiel indikas la titolo, neologismoj, kaj, verŝajne la unuan fojon en eldonita romano, la pronomo ri, anstataŭ li kaj ŝi. Akompanis ĝin Malgranda frato, tradukita en laŭnorman Esperanton. La anonco generis kelkajn laŭtajn plendojn pri la «Esperantido-Asocio de Britio», kaj kelkajn plaĉajn laŭdojn. Entute, tamen, ĝi pasis senatente: vendiĝis nur 25 (Sibo) kaj 29 (Frato) ekzempleroj en la ok monatoj post la lanĉo, plejparte en la unua monato.

Plia kontribuo de karmemorulo
Kiel jam menciite nia oferto en junio estis la infanlibro Tro da aĵoj. Julio estis senbrua monato, sed la 1-an de aŭgusto aperis postmorta kontribuo de Marjorie Boulton. Temas pri Koriolano, tragedio de Ŝekspiro. Ĝustigis kaj netigis ŝiajn provojn Humphrey Tonkin, kiu ankaŭ tradukis la mankantajn akton kaj partojn, kaj prelegis pri la libro en la Universala Kongreso en Torino, kie ĝi estis lanĉita. Kongresanoj havis la okazon aĉeti alian tute novan libron, kiam Tim Owen prezentis dum aŭtora duonhoro Doktoro Esperanto kaj la lingvo de espero, verkitan de Mara Rockliff. Al la legantoj por diveni, pri kiu kaj kio temas! Fine de aŭgusto aperis plia infanlibro, La zorgo-tigro, tradukita de Jorge Rafael Nogueras. Temas pri infano, kiu angoras pri la lernejo: tio ŝanĝiĝas, kiam li renkontas «zorgo-tigron», kiu instruas, ke la knabo «pensu kiel tigro» por trankviligi sin. Librofine troviĝas serio da facilaj mensaj ekzercoj por plifaciligi ripozadon kaj malintensigi angorojn.

Jarfinaj eldonoj
En oktobro revenis klasikaĵo en novaj vestaĵoj kaj kun amikoj: Gerda kaj Elza estas kunmetaĵoj de tri baznivelaj noveloj de Claude Piron: Gerda malaperis!, Lasu min paroli plu!, kaj Ili kaptis Elzan! Tre surprizis min, kiel furore tiu ĉi titolo estis: vendiĝis 74 ekzempleroj en la unua monato!

Infanlibro  kara al mi salutis la mondon en novembro, kiam ni eldonis La insektaĉego, infanlibron pri malagrabla besteto – memproklamita ano «de specio speciala» – kiu kutimas agi senpune laŭ siaj kapricoj. Tradukis ĝin studentoj de mia supera kurso ĉe NASK (Nord-Amerika Somera Kursaro) en 2022.

Decembro estis, laŭ la ekstera percepto, tre aktiva monato, ĉar kvar diversaj titoloj eldoniĝis en ĝi. En la komenco aperis du infanlibroj tradukitaj de Clare Hunter. Ne mi faris! temas pri plej karaj amikoj Elizo kaj Ĉarlo, kiuj solaj estas sur insulo ... kaj devas kulpigi unu la alian, kiam diversaj aĵoj komencas malaperi, malgraŭ la fortaj kontraŭasertoj. La dua estas Kara bestoĝardeno, klasika libro jam dum 40 jaroj por tre junaj infanoj en Britujo. La leganto, dezirante hejmbeston, skribis al la loka bestoĝardeno. Sed kion ili sendis? Necesas levi la klapon por vidi, konstati, ke la sendita besto iel ne taŭgas, kaj ripeti, ĝis finfine alvenos la perfekta kvarpieda familiano.

En Zamenhof-tago finfine estis publike disponebla la libro prezentita en Torino, Doktoro Esperanto kaj la lingvo de espero. Kaj restis unu lasta titolo por adiaŭi la jaron: la tria en la Muminserio, Memoroj de Muminpatro, kiel kutime en traduko de Sten Johansson. La restantajn kvar serierojn ni planas eldoni en 2024.

The 44^th Annual General Meeting of EAB was held in Cambridge on April 23, 2023, during which the incumbent four trustees stood for re-election in a secret ballot. The results were:

All four were duly elected for a further year, and Edmund Grimley Evans remains as president.

La finiĝanta jaro montriĝis senprecendence fekunda rilate libro-eldonadon fare de EAB.

En januaro lanĉiĝis tri infanlibroj:

En aprilo ni lanĉis nian plej luksan libron: novan eldonon de La aventuroj de Alico en Mirlando, tradukita de Donald Broadribb kaj Edmund Grimley Evans, kun ilustraĵoj de Chris Riddell. 

En la sama monato ni reeldonis Ĉu li bremsis sufiĉe?, krimromanon originale verkitan en Esperanto de Claude Piron.

Majo estis kvieta monato, sed en la sekva monato aperis brila libro festanta diversecon, Ni ĉiuj estas malsamaj (tradukis: Jorge Rafael Nogueras).

En aŭgusto eldoniĝis du infanlibroj:

• Kvin ursoj (tradukis: Clare Hunter).

• Lunkato kaj mi (tradukis: Clare Hunter).

En la sama monato nia La domo ĉe Pu-Angulo estis anoncita la infanlibro de la jaro por 2021 en la Belartaj Konkursoj de UEA.

En septembro ni eldonis du librojn:

• Kometo en Muminvalo (tradukis: Sten Johansson), la unuan libron en la konata Mumin-serio.

• La kurioza incidento de la hundo en la nokto (tradukis: Simon Davies), krimromano kies originala versio estis la libro de la jaro en Britujo en 2003.

Fine de oktobro ni lanĉis du pliajn infanlibrojn:

• La fajrovulpo (tradukis: Lee Miller).

• La plej eta elefanto (tradukis: Łukasz Żebrowski).

Laste, sed certe ne balaste, ni eldonis en novembro duvoluman kolekton de la plena poezia verkaro de Marjorie Boulton, Unu animo homa, pro kio ĝia redaktoro, Edmund Grimley Evans, estis elektita Esperantisto de la Jaro.

Entute, do, ni eldonis en 2022 15 alt-kvalitajn librojn!

En 2022 kulminis projekto preskaŭ jardek-longa: la duvoluma plena poezia verkaro de Marjorie Boulton, Unu animo homa. Tiun ĉi elstaran kontribuon al la pluvivado de la kultura heredaĵo de Esperanto redaktis Edmundo, kaj elstare diligente: la tasko postulis multe pli ol represadon de ŝiaj libroj!

Elektante lin ĉefe pro tiu ĉi elstaraĵo, oni agnoskis ankaŭ plurajn aliajn liajn kontribuojn: ekzemple, ke li estas la tradukinto de la Infanlibro de la jaro por 2022, La domo ĉe Pu-Angulo. 

Gratulon, do, al Edmundo! La oficialan anoncon eblas legi ĉe Sezonoj.

Unu animo homa kaj La domo ĉe Pu-angulo eblas aĉeti ĉe ni kaj aliloke.

Kiel informas nia estrarano Simone Davis en filmeto, EAB hodiaŭ lanĉas ne unu, sed du traduk-konkursojn!

En la ĉefa konkurso, oni tradukos ĉapitrojn unu kaj tri de Rebecca, verkita de Daphne du Maurier. En nia konkurso nova talento, en kiu rajtas partopreni ĉiu krom homoj jam tradukintaj tekston 12.000 vortojn longan, konkursontoj devos traduki la unuan ĉapitron de Matilda de Roald Dahl.

Kial konkursi?

Krom la persona defio kaj ĝojo partopreni kaj eble gajni, niaj konkursoj havas konkretan premion: gajninte, oni fariĝos tradukanto de la tuta libro, kiujn ni poste eldonos! Imagu: vi povus vidi vian nomon apud tiu de renoma aŭtoro! Kaj se vi ja ĝustatempe transdonos al ni pres-kvalitan tradukon, ni donos al vi ne nur viajn personajn ekzemplerojn de la publikigita libro, sed pagos al vi £500 (~575€) kiel dankesprimon!

La gajninto de la konkurso nova talento ricevos ankaŭ ses unu-horajn sesiojn kun spertaj esperantistoj por pli-akrigi siajn kapablaojn, kaj tiu de la ĉefa konkurso rajtos konsultiĝi, peti helpon, kaj simile.

Pri ĉio alia rilate eldonadon – aĉeti la traduk-rajtojn, enpaĝigi, redakti, krei la kovrilon, disponebligi, plenumi mendojn, ktp – okupiĝos ni je nia kosto: vi okupiĝos pri la tradukado.

Ni lanĉas la konkursojn hodiaŭ, la 15-an de novembro. Oni rajtas kandidatiĝi ĝis la fino de la 15-a de decembro, Zamenhof-tago. La tradukojn oni devos sendi plej laste fine de la 31-a de januaro 2023.

Reĝino Elizabeto II-a estas mortinta. La plejparto el la ĉi-landaj loĝantaj – kaj milionoj da homoj ĉirkaŭ la mondo – nun klopodas alkutimiĝi al la malapero de konstanto en nia vivo, alte estimata virino, kiu, dum sep jardekoj, estis la ŝtatestro en nia konstitucia monarĥaĵo. Ni en EAB, por montri respekton al ŝi, dumtempe ŝanĝis la aspekton de nia retejo: anstataŭ la kutima verda rubando en la kapo, vi vidos dum la sekvaj tagoj nigran.

Unuafoje en 70 jaroj mortis nia ŝtatestro: por la granda plimulto el ni, la nuna okazaĵo estas la unua ŝanĝo de reginto al reganto, kiun ni atestis. Ni kredas, do, ke povus esti interese montri, kiel respondis niaj antaŭuloj, kiam siatempe Elizabeto, tiam 25-jarulo, transprenis la kronon. (La kronado okazis, kiam ŝi estis 27-jara.)

Esperanto House, our headquarters, sits on a site of the former Wedgwood Memorial College in Barlaston, Staffordshire, alongside a much bigger building named Estoril, after which this particular site is named.

Wedgwood Memorial College was closed down in April 2012, and since then both Estoril and The Limes, the main building on the second site, have been empty. Naturally enough, two large buildings standing derelict over the past decade has led to vandalism, forced entry, and squatting. This recently progressed to Esperanto House, which suffered a break-in when a perpetrator smashed the glass of the door to the Butler Library and let himself into the property.

His haul was particularly unimpressive, limited, it appears, to some petty cash, a first-aid box (he cut himself smashing the glass, handily leaving some DNA around for forensics, who have already matched him to an individual in their database), and about seventy copies of one of our children's books. Following the break-in, we immediately placed some valuable artefacts (such as the painting of Zamenhof from 1907 by Felix Moscheles, and some historical journals from the Butler Library) into external storage away from Barlaston.

Unfortunately, despite the poor hoard, the perpetrator appears to have informed an accomplice about an office which isn't occupied around the clock, and the following weekend another crook broke in, this time smashing the glass panes in every door, and ransacking also the upstairs. As before, his efforts don't appear to have been worth the while: he left with an old, unused digital camera from 2005, and an old, low-spec (£300!) laptop which barely runs, and which can only be accessed via an admin password anyway.

Following the initial break-in we purchased CCTV, the installation of which was kindly expedited because of the second. The police have been very helpful, responding extremely promptly both times, and getting the forensics crew out immediately. We're now looking into purchasing external iron shutters; the landlords have given permission but, unfortunately, planning permission needs to be sought from the Borough Council, which is a slow process and not guaranteed to succeed.

Pro sia libro La domo ĉe Pu-Angulo, Esperanto-Asocio de Britio estis aljuĝita la eldonejo, kiu publikigis la Infanlibron de la Jaro en 2021. Gratulon al Edmund Grimley Evans, kiu tradukis ĝin!

La domo ĉe Pu-Angulo, traduko de The House at Pooh Corner, estas plenkolora malmole bindita libro, presita sur dika papero, kaj kun kromkovrilo, aĉetebla ĉe EAB kontraŭ £15.

Se vi ne certas pri via nivelo, troviĝas specimenaj ekzamenoj en la libro elŝutebla en tiu ĉi paĝo. Se vi daŭre ne certas, ni konsilas elekti la pli simplan el viaj elektebloj: tiel vi ne metos vin sub nenecesan premon, kaj povos en sekva jaro trapasi la malpli simplan.

In today's AGM, all four trustee candidates were successfully returned:

We became aware that new financial regulations requiring something called Strong Customer Authentication were about to come into effect in the UK. Without updating the site to comply with them, many customers would have faced a frustrating experience in which card payments were unnecessarily declined. (You may have noticed this yourself when purchasing elsewhere, and may have recently received a communication from your personal bank advising you that you will be asked to confirm your credentials more often when purchasing by card.)

The software running this site needed to be updated to the most recent version in order to communicate correctly with our payment gateway. Our site was always going to break when updated over a major change, doubly so considering that much of it is personalised. Unfortunately, the news clashed with other urgent deadlines which couldn't be immediately dropped to concentrate exclusively on testing updated software and repairing the damage. 

On the positive side, we've now made the essential changes such that you can continue to enjoy a seamless experience when purchasing, and have taken the opportunity to improve several features rather than simply returning them to their previous state. Some pages previously on the site have not yet been repaired/improved. We'll be adding more pages over time, once other pressures abate.

EAB is offering financial support to people living in the UK to participate in the three-day Printempa Reta Kursaro ("PoRKo") in  from May 7-9.

PoRKo has classes for all levels, from just-starting-on-Duolingo (A1) to just-finished-La-Mastro-de-l'Ringoj (C1), with experienced Esperanto teachers from France, Hungary, Poland and the UK.

The evening programme of talks, short concerts, and games will be open to the public. See the event page on Facebook for more details.

The course normally costs €99 (concessions: €69). The class size is limited to 12, and will meet on Zoom.

If you live in the UK and would like to be considered for financial support towards the cost of participating, please apply using this form. For levels B1, B2 and C1, please answer the questions in Esperanto rather than in English. Levels A1 and A2 may apply in English. For us to make a payment to you, you will need to have a British bank account. We will expect in return a report or something similar proportionate to the size of the grant, which we will discuss with candidates beforehand.

Elections were held by postal vote in 2021 because the restrictions on gathering in public meant that it was not possible to hold an AGM. Members all received ballots with Update 93 and had around weeks to return their ballots before April 18. The votes have been counted by Viv O'Dunne and Bill Walker.

All five candidates were duly elected, and Edmund Grimley Evans, the sole candidate for presidency, takes over the role from the retiring Ian Carter. Ed Robertson has also stepped down after ten years' service.

On the ballot was a second subject upon which members were asked to share their views. The draft minutes of the 2019 AGM were circulated with Update 89 in advance of the planned 2020 AGM, which was later postponed and then cancelled. Members were asked in Update 89 to submit significant changes to the EAB office by a certain date. Since no changes were submitted, it might be reasonable to assume that the 2020 AGM would have therefore voted to accept the minutes substantially unchanged. The second vote, therefore, asked the members to express whether they would prefer those draft minutes to be considered approved, discussion held off until AGM 2022, or whether they had no preference. The results were:

Amazon discontinued Amazon Smile in February 2023.

Did you know that Amazon runs a system by which it will transfer a small percentage of the price of eligible products to a charity of your choice? That scheme is called Amazon Smile, and EAB is one of the charity's you can select.

To make use of the service, be sure to use the Amazon Smile site rather than the standard Amazon one: smile.amazon.co.uk Everything about the site is the same as the normal one except the name.

Once you're there and are logged in, you will be asked to select your charity. We're easy enough to track down:

And then you shop as normal. That's all you have to do: the rest is automatic. Hovering on the AmazonSmile item in your user bar will show you which charity you've nominated, and what you've raised so far.

It's also available within the app!

So it's really straightforward. The only challenge is remembering to shop at Amazon Smile instead of the usual location. You just have to get used to typing 'sm' and letting your browser remember the rest!

Our friend Bill Chapman, an Esperantist since the age of 16, sadly passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 21 2020. Bill had been battling cancer, with his usual cheer and optimism, over the past year. Unfortunately, despite steps to isolate him, Bill contracted Covid-19 and was taken to hospital, where he left us, although not before telling the nursing staff all about Esperanto, true to form!

It isn't possible to do justice to Bill in a notification like this one. Rest assured that there will be more about Bill in the next issue of La Brita Esperantisto. Much as many of us would dearly like to salute Bill, I'm afraid that lockdown restrictions limiting public gatherings and entry into Wales mean that it is very unlikely that we will have the opportunity to. If the situation changes, I will post an update.

Bill's family have nominated two charities which meant something to Bill, should anybody wish to make a donation in his memory. They are:

• Citizens Advice Bangor, which offers free, independent and confidential advice that helps people with legal and financial worries, and of which Bill was a trustee;
• Awyr Las Gogledd Cymru - Blue Sky North Wales, an NHS Charity that supports the specific hospital wards, departments or community healthcare services which the NHS in North Wales cannot provide.

EAB has created an account on SoundCloud where we are uploading recordings from the past.

The presentations were recorded on audio cassettes by Ivor Hueting. Newly digitised, they're now freely available for all to enjoy.

The first presentation uploaded is of our honorary president, John Wells, from the World Esperanto Congress in Brighton in 1989, who had just been elected president of UEA. The subject matter is a pronunciation preference survey which he had conducted to inform the Longman Pronunciation Dictionary, published in 1990. Dry? Not at all! It clocks in at around an hour of faultlessly delivered Esperanto. Whether you're a new learner or have decades of singing La Espero under your belt, you'll get something out of it.

We will soon add contributions from Ivo Lapenna, Marjorie Boulton, and William Auld, to name just a few. We hope you enjoy what's in store!

Owing to the restrictions imposed by the UK Government on March 23, EAB's AGM is now postponed. We do not currently have an alternative date to announce.

EAB's trustees are obliged to hold an AGM before October 1. They therefore have plenty of time to consider solutions to the restrictions on gathering in public and unnecessary travel. The Charity Commission advises that charities which have a clause in their governing document providing for General Meetings to be conducted virtually should consider using it; EAB, however, does not have this option available. I'm afraid that holding the AGM digitally is therefore not currently a possibility.

Several members have submitted postal votes for the trustee elections and nominated proxies to represent them at the AGM. Since the announced AGM has now been postponed, the postal votes will be discarded and proxy arrangements cancelled. I'm sorry that this will cause inconvenience for some of you down the line, but it seems preferable to start afresh than risk confusion several months hence.

Owing to a constitutional amendment made in 2014, meetings of the trustees can be held virtually, which means that trustee meetings will still go ahead. The trustees will hold a short virtual meeting in a month or so's time to formally confirm a decision made in email to co-opt Simone Davis, a candidate for trusteeship, on the basis that she would almost certainly have been appointed by the members in the AGM. Since Rich Smith and Damon Lord would have stood down at the AGM, they will be recorded as having done so. This process means that the trustees' working weekend, scheduled for May 2-3, will have those people present who were originally intended to be.

Please do note that Esperanto House is currently off limits to visitors and purchases from the bookshop might not arrive quite as quickly as usual. La Brita Esperantisto was sent to the printer's last week and so should be with you soon. Once things become clearer regarding the AGM, we will be in touch to make you aware.

In the meantime, restu sanaj kaj sekuraj.

Regrettably, EAB has had to cancel this year’s conference owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The AGM, a legal obligation, will still take place in line with the notification issued in Update.

The UK Government has issued advice that everyone should cease non-essential contact with others and not engage in unnecessary travel, adding that social venues should be avoided. The advice underlined that this is particularly important for people over 70.

Holding our conference would clearly run completely counter to that advice. The trustees have therefore had no choice but to cancel the event. It is not a decision which EAB has made rashly or in haste. We have, of course, offered a refund to the people who signed up to the conference.

The AGM is more problematic in that holding it is a legal requirement. The Charity Commission has not yet produced guidance, and so the trustees have decided to attempt to hold the AGM as a formality in Leicester at the time and place indicated in our formal notification sent out in Update. Members who cannot attend have been reminded that they can appoint another member to serve as a proxy.

La brita registaro ‘forte konsilas’, ke ĉiuj evitu ne-necesan kontakton kun aliaj, kaj veturu nur se necese. Plie ĝi avertis, ke oni evitu sociajn lokojn, substrekante, ke tiuj konsiloj estas des pli gravaj por tiuj, kiuj estas 70-jaraj aŭ pli aĝaj.

Okazigo de la Brita Kongreso agus tute kontraŭ tiuj konsiloj. EAB tial ne havis alian eblon krom nuligi la aranĝon. Tiun decidon EAB ne faris haste aŭ senpense. Ni kompreneble proponis al aliĝintoj rehavigon de ilia kotizo.
