Gerda Malaperis - La Filmo (DVD)

The mystery story Gerda Malaperis by Claude Piron is specially written for beginners (and is included as part of EAB's Elementary..! Esperanto Course). The novel is written in simple but elegant language which introduces a carefully-chosen selection of new words with each chapter; these words then occur again in later chapters so that you become familiar with them.

This DVD is "the film of the book", and presents the story in an exciting, lively drama, fimed on location in Brazil with a cast of proficient Esperanto-speakers. The film lasts 1 hour 12 minutes, and the DVD also has some "deleted scenes" and other goodies.

Optional subtitles are available in a variety of languages, including English and Esperanto. (Note that on the subtitles menu, the flag with a green star is the icon for the Esperanto subtitles; the abbreviation "ESP" is for "Español"= Spanish.)

The DVD is not region-restricted but is recorded in NTSC format (525 lines/60 Hz); this is an American/Japanese TV standard which may not be compatible with some older European DVD players or TVs (which expect PAL format recordings). However, modern DVD players and TVs which are labeled "multi-standard" can handle both formats, and computer-based DVD player software can usually cope with both formats too.

Important note for students

• Although the film does follow the written story's plot, for dramatic reasons some scenes from the book have been cut or trimmed, a few extra scenes have been added, and some of the dialogue has been changed slightly. So the DVD can be used in addition to the book and audio-CD recordings, but it doesn't replace them; while studying your course's lessons, you should still read the book and listen to the audio CDs

• An important learning activity in your course is the task of reading the book or listening to the CDs in Esperanto, then working out for yourself what that text means, and what the equivalent English translation would be. So we strongly recommend that you avoid viewing the English subtitles on the DVD, at least until after you've covered the relevant scenes/chapters in your course.

• However, watching the action while listening to the dialogue and seeing the Esperanto text on the screen can be a very powerful way of reinforcing your learning from the course and book, so we do recommend that you make use of the Esperanto subtitles on the DVD.
